Community Service
Our Antibiotics Awareness program aims to promote appropriate antibiotics use and disease prevention within the community. Students inform local elementary students and parents of the importance of personal hygiene and antibiotic resistance, while providing general information regarding bacteria and viruses. The goal of our program is to reduce widespread antibiotic resistance in conjunction with providing our student pharmacist members an opportunity to directly impact the community.
Mental Health Matters
UIW-SSHP recognizes that approximately 55.7 million Americans experience a diagnosable mental health disorder each year. Accordingly, we seek to bring awareness of the importance of diagnosis and treatment in this often overlooked affliction. The Mental Health Matters program educates the San Antonio community on common mental health disorders regarding signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. We also provide guidance and resources for further assistance should patients request it.
Teddy Bear Drive
Our annual Teddy Bear Drive collects teddy bears and additional stuffed animals donated from fellow pharmacy students. The teddy bears are funneled through the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and subsequently donated in entirety to a preselected children’s hospital. The program aims to bring joy and provide a small comfort to children enduring difficult times. Past collections have been donated to institutions such as Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas in Austin, Texas and Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas.
Canned Food Drive
The canned food drive collects donated canned goods for donation to local San Antonio homeless shelters. Through this annual project, our organization makes an effort to improve the lives of those in our community by trying to alleviate some of their basic hunger needs. Past collections have been donated to the San Antonio Food Bank and SAMMinistries in San Antonio, TX.
